Bamboo textiles

What are the different types of textiles produced from bamboo and what are their characteristics and differences?

Bamboo is a versatile plant that can be transformed into various types of textiles. Here are some common types of bamboo textiles, with their main characteristics and differences:

1) Bamboo Viscose (Rayon Bamboo):

  • Features: Soft and silky texture; breathable; good moisture absorption properties; often mixed with other fibers such as cotton orSpandexFor greater strength and elasticity.
  • Production: Bamboo is subjected to a chemical process to extract cellulose, which is then dissolved and made into fibers.
2) Bamboo Liocel (Tencel Bamboo):
  • Features: Smooth, soft and comfortable; highly absorbent; environmentally friendly production process using a closed cycle system that recycles solvents.
  • Production: Similar to viscose, but with a more environmentally friendly manufacturing process, using a spinning method with solvents to create fibers.

3) Bamboo Linen:

  • Features: Similar to traditional linen, but with a softer touch; breathable; good absorption and moisture release; tendency to wrinkle.
  • Production: Manufactured from bamboo fibers through mechanical or chemical processes, resulting in a fabric similar to linen.

4) Bamboo Charcoal Fabric:

  • Features: Odor-resistant; thermoregulator; antibacterial properties; absorbs moisture; often used in sportswear and underwear.
  • Production: Bamboo charcoal is produced by burning bamboo at high temperatures, then turning it into a fine powder and mixing it with fabric fibers.

5) Organic cotton blends with bamboo:

  • Features: Mixing bamboo with organic cotton results in a soft, breathable and environmentally friendly fabric.
  • Production: Bamboo fibers are combined with organic cotton during the production process of the fabric.

Differences:

  • Production process: Bamboo viscose involves a chemical process, while bamboo liocel utilizes a more environmentally friendly solvent spinning method. Bamboo linen can be manufactured through mechanical or chemical processes.
  • Texture: Bamboo viscose tends to have a silky feel, while bamboo linen has a more textured feel, similar to that of linen.
  • Absorption: Bamboo fabrics, in general, are known for their moisture absorption properties, but the degree of absorption varies. The lyocel and viscose may have a higher absorption compared to flax or bamboo blends.
  • Specific properties: Bamboo charcoal fabric stands out for its odor resistance and antibacterial properties, and is often used in specialized clothing.

When choosing bamboo textiles, take into account the specific properties you are looking for, whether it be softness, moisture absorption capacity, environmental friendliness or specialized characteristics such as resistance to odors. Each type of bamboo fabric has its unique advantages, so the choice depends on personal preferences and the intended use.
